Viral Snack Cromboloni, Is It Healthier Than Bomboloni? Check Its Nutritional Content

If you still remember Cronut akacroissant donut which went viral in 2013, now a similar one has appeared, namely Cromboloni. It’s a combination croissant with bomboloni (a typical Italian donut without a hole in the middle and filled with cream). So which is healthier than bomboloni? Let’s check it out by knowing the nutritional facts.

The Origin of Cromboloni

It was pastry chef Scott Cioe from Lafayette Grand Café & Bakery, in New York who created this sweet snack and introduced it in April 2022. The pastry is called The Suprême.

Made from pastry dough that is shaped in a circle like a wheel, different from the usual croissants in the shape of a crescent moon, then injected with various flavors of cream, this method adopts making bomboloni. The top is covered with a layer of hardened sugar.

Like Cronut, The Suprême quickly went viral, including recently in Indonesia, where it became better known as cromboloni. In Indonesia, a pastry cafe from France, Monsieur Spoon is the one who serves it. Now a number of cake and bakery shops have started selling them, although not many.

Just like other sweet snacks, although moderatehappening, you also need to control how many portions you can eat so that it doesn’t cause health problems in the future.

Cromboloni vs Bomboloni Which is Healthier?

Croissants, which have around 200-500 kcal per piece, are considered a low-nutrient and unhealthy food because they provide energy in the form of added sugar and unhealthy fat (saturated fat). Croissants are also considered an empty calorie food that generally contains high amounts of sodium.

Meanwhile, donuts contain calories between 250-550 kcal, with a sugar content of 15-30 grams in each donut. This is a real health problem.

Large sugar spikes cause extreme drops in sugar levels. So you will quickly feel hungry and need more carbohydrates even after breakfast with donuts. High sugar levels will also make the body pump a lot of insulin to process sugar into energy.

Both cromboloni and bomboloni are delicious snacks, but they are also not a healthy choice. Both of these foods contain very high levels of sugar and saturated fat. However, comparing the two, cromboloni is slightly higher in protein, but also contains more saturated fat than bomboloni.

The good news is, even though they both have cream or jam fillings that taste sweet, cromboloni can be said to be healthier because the cooking process is not fried like bomboloni, but baked. Baking is a cooking technique that tends to be healthier than frying.

The reason is, grilling requires little or no cooking oil at all, so it doesn’t cause any reactions to the food. On the other hand, in the frying process, the hot temperature of the cooking oil can actually change the starch essence of the foodcarcinogenor cancer-causing substances. Exposure to high levels of carcinogens puts the body at high risk of heart disease and cancer.

Tips for Enjoying Cromboloni in a Healthier Way

But don’t worry, you can still enjoy delicious cromboloni in a healthier way. Here are the tips:

  1. Make your own cromboloni. In this way, we can ensure that the ingredients used are better and healthier.

2.Make cromboloni using whole wheat flour rather than wheat flour. Whole wheat flour has a lower glycemic index, is richer in fiber and will make you feel full longer

  2. Chew longer. Chewing your food not only increases the enjoyment of eating, but helps your body digest food better and reduces your chances of overeating.
